Translational Science and Medicine (TSM) is an integrated group of scientists composed of a clinical Translational Medicine (TM) team which conducts early clinical development and experimental medicine studies, and a translational science (TS) team which uses human based data and tissues to support the end-to-end portfolio. Together, the TSM group will provide the key learnings/insights on the next wave of novel therapies for these patients. Organizationally, TSM serves as a pivotal bridge between Discovery Research and the later phase Clinical Development group. TSM provides the necessary scientific and clinical expertise to advance an industry-leading pipeline of novel mechanism small molecules and biologic agents to address unmet need in immune-mediated diseases.

TS has a broad remit stretching from support of discovery with human data to support target selection, through development of novel decision- making biomarkers for early phase clinical trials, target-centric indication sequencing and prioritization, and biomarker support of regulatory filings. TS has expertise in biomarker development, disease biology research and in the application of immunology and data science technologies to support drug discovery and development.

The Principal Scientist will be a project leader in the Immunology Translational Science team focusing on genomics and computational biology, with a particular focus on the Rheumatology portfolio. The successful candidate will contribute to the computational biology and genomics strategy for Immunology programs and will be effective in the use of relevant computational tools to deliver high-dimensional biological data across all aspect of portfolio development.

The Principal Scientist in TS will serve as a key project analyst for computational biology and genomics in the Rheumatology area, accountable for analytical and platform support as well as providing strategic input to Translational Science and Medicine colleagues. The candidate will bring an enthusiastic, rigorous and enterprise thinking mindset to Translational Sciences.

They will be effective in the use of relevant computational tools for experimental or trial research objectives and demonstrate advanced data analysis techniques to high-dimensional biological data. The candidate will ensure delivery of completed data and analyses in support of key program milestones and drive technical excellence in translational science and biomarker research. Further, the successful candidate will support their teams with computational support of analytical projects and collaborate with Immunology partners to generate and deliver additional research projects of utility to Immunology and contribute to the strategy for mining human molecular data to identify therapeutic targets within pathways of interest and to derive and validate patient stratification hypotheses and biomarker-based endpoint strategies.

Responsibilities are as follows:

  • Design and implement translational science and biomarker projects integrating both disease and pathway analytical approaches to support portfolio programs
  • Contribute to the strategies enabling molecular understanding of human diseases, patient stratification and biomarker-based endpoint translational strategies
  • Guide team members in the communication of project results
  • Collaborate with partner functions to ensure project goals are met
  • Deliver translational packages for the evaluation of molecular data in support of target evaluation, indication selection and patient stratification in collaboration with teams from discovery through to medical affairs
  • Generate and deliver research to drive technical excellence in translational science
  • Keep current with advances in the computational and genomics field and ensure external innovative approaches are applied to internal programs as appropriate

Qualifications:

  • PhD is required with a minimum of 4-6 years of experience
  • Expertise and proficiency in performing and interpreting transcriptomics analyses is required
  • Experience gaining biological insights using translational and biomarker high-dimensional biological data (e.g., transcriptomics, genomics, etc.) is required
  • Suitable proficiency in programming with R, Python, or similar language for ‘omics analysis is required
  • Industry and/or translational research experience is preferred
  • Outstanding communication and collaboration skills are required
  • Expertise in genetic/genomic integration (e.g. with scRNAseq, proteomics) is preferred
  • Familiarity with published genomics literature for immune mediated diseases is preferred
  • Familiarity with large-scale phenotypic data e.g. from electronic health records is preferred
  • Experience working within cross-function teams is preferred
