In the department of Discovery Chemistry, we currently have an internship position for 1 person (m/f/x):

Job description

As part of the small molecule discovery chemistry unit, the successful candidate will apply some of the emerging synthetic methodologies (such as electrochemistry, photocatalysis and late-stage functionalization) and technologies (such as flow chemistry and high-throughput experimentation, HTE) in the context of compound optimization. This is a unique occasion to work in a state-of-the-art industrial research facility benefiting from the guidance of high-calibre chemists. After an initial training provided by an experienced team member, the successful candidate will participate in the synthesis, and characterization of biologically active molecules applying the most recent advances in the field of organic chemistry. She/he will be exposed to a wide range of synthetic methodologies.

Your contribution

Mentored by an industry expert, you will contribute to the synthesis of and characterization of organic molecules in the context of a drug discovery project by applying the latest developments in organic chemistry. The ultimate goal of a drug discovery project is to deliver a candidate molecule that will progress in the clinical stages to reach patients in need. In this context, you will have the chance to contribute to the improvement of patients’ lives.

Responsibilities and duties:

  • Work together with a group of highly motivated scientists in a state-of-the-art laboratory in the J&J chemistry department.
  • Participate in an active small molecule drug discovery program.
  • Synthesize novel molecules to support the understanding of the structure-activity-relationship (SAR) within the active chemical series.
  • After an initial training and introduction in the department, able to independently operate and propose alternatives or solutions for challenging synthetic routes.

  • Strong theoretical and practical background in organic synthesis.
  • Strong interest in the latest development of synthetic methodologies.
  • Experience with QC analysis techniques like LC-MS and HNMR.
  • Highly motivated and open mindset to operate and learn in a dynamic
scientific environment, both independent and as part of a team.
  • Fast learner, independent & critical thinker.
  • Able to efficiently work with common software packages like Office 365, SciFinder, …
