Pharmaceutical & Material Sciences is, within the Pharmaceutical Development & Supply (PPDS) organization of the Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson and Johnson, responsible for preformulation & biopharmaceutics, solid state form selection, material selection and qualification.

In Belgium (Beerse) there is a vacancy for a (Senior) Scientist in Solid State Sciences & Characterization. Within this role you will provide experienced scientific leadership in the solid-state area, ensuring that we perform to unparalleled heights on a global scale.

You will collaborate with discovery and process chemists, analytical chemists, formulators, quality assurance and regulatory personnel with the aim to select and control the solid-state form of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) and its attributes, monitoring the solid form in the drug product (DP) at every stage of the clinical development. Your technical skills will allow you to cover conventional and enabling formulations (e.g. amorphous solid dispersions, nano-systems…). You will be responsible for selecting and developing the right API and carry out the drug product control strategy.

The selection of a proper API solid state form with its corresponding physical properties is the key to:

  • Drug product performance including PK profile as defined in target product profile
  • A thermodynamically stable API, in its free form, salt or cocrystal
  • A robust and reproducible API manufacturing process
  • A physically and chemically stable formulation
  • A robust drug product manufacturing process

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert input on solid state selection for projects.
  • Design and execute experiments to mitigate risks in formulation process.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation for filing/registration.
  • Apply solid state modelling software.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Conduct laboratory work and explore modeling techniques.
  • Build phase diagrams and support crystallization processes.
  • Expertise in crystallography (XRPD, SC-XRD) and analytical techniques (DSC, TGA, GVS, Raman, IR…).

Kwalificaties

Education:

  • Educational background at research level (PhD or MSc or equivalent experience with appropriate qualifications) in a relevant subject area (e.g. chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, computational sciences)

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Proven expertise in solid-state chemistry and experience working with pharmaceutical compounds in a laboratory.
  • Strong proficiency in computational modelling techniques, such as molecular modelling, crystal structure prediction, building tailor made force fields and/or density functional theory (DFT).
  • Proficiency in relevant software tools for modelling and data analysis (e.g., Schrödinger Suite, Materials Studio, Gaussian, CASTEP, COSMOTherm, DL Poly, CCDC software suite). Experience in writing or adapting code (for example Python, Matlab or similar) would be an advantage.

Preferred:

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to apply scientific principles to address complex challenges in drug development.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and present findings internally and externally.
  • Scientific leadership evidenced by a strong publication track record.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a problem-solving attitude and focus on delivery. Experience in data science and modelling, including management of large datasets.

Our offer:

  • An exciting position in an international and dynamic environment with continuous learning and growth opportunities
  • Working on a site that harbors all aspects of the drug discovery process, located close to the vibrant city of Antwerp.
  • A competitive salary, on-site sport accommodations, health/energy programs and other benefits for you and your family.
