The Director, In Vivo Sciences (IVS) Site Lead provides leadership for the in-house vivarium and animal care and welfare program located in La Jolla, CA. This role will serve as the single point of accountability and decision making for the animal care and welfare program.

Director, IVS Site Lead responsibilities include:

  • Strategic responsibility and oversight for all local activities, including day to day management of all IVS functional subject area activities, including Animal Welfare & Regulatory Compliance, Veterinary Care, In Vivo Models & Scientific Collaborations, Vivarium Operations & Management, External Engagement & 3Rs.  These responsibilities include but are not limited to local leadership, active communications with research partners, budget & future capital oversight, innovation strategy, resource management, and implementation of vital policies and procedures required to build a sustainable program while ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate on the Global IVS Leadership Team and may serve as a primary delegate for the VP, Global Head of In Vivo Sciences. As a member of the Global IVS Leadership Team, The Director, IVS Site Lead is a key contributor to setting of the global IVS strategy and will ensure local implementation of harmonization, globalization, and standardization approaches that drive programmatic level efficiencies and continuous improvement. The role will serve as a global champion and will partner with others to increase awareness of the 3Rs, including the promotion of refinements of animal use methodologies, reduction of animal numbers when appropriate, and exploration of alternatives to animal use whenever possible.
  • The Director, IVS Site Lead will be responsible for fostering a collaborative culture and will work with a large number of internal and external partners to achieve desired outcomes. They will serve as a visible and effective change agent for global initiatives and will seek to provide strategic decision making for all areas of responsibility while nurturing the ideas of others.
  • The Director, IVS Site Lead will have a desire for learning and innovation, and continue career development through participation in scientific meetings, and increase visibility for self, Janssen R&D, and J&J through publications, participation in external organizations, and presentations at major scientific, industry, and regulatory meetings.
  • This role has responsibility for hiring, retaining, training, and developing a diverse workforce. This includes ensuring recruitment and professional development of staff is strategically aligned with organizational objectives and priorities and ensuring appropriate performance management including mentor and evaluating outcomes. This role will also be responsible for local occupational health and safety within the vivarium.

Kwalificaties

Qualifications:

  • Minimum DVM, VMD, Ph.D. with 7 years+ of relevant experience is required. DVM, ACLAM boarded veterinarian highly preferred. In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements related to research animals including US and international animal welfare guidelines and AAALAC standards is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements related to research animals including US and international animal welfare guidelines and AAALAC standards is required.
  • Extensive experience in vivarium operations and facility management including a solid understanding of key vivarium equipment and operational processes is required.
  • Ability to wear all Personal Protective Equipment required to perform work tasks; Applicable vaccinations may be required for entry and work within specific laboratory and vivarium spaces.
  • Direct expereince in people management is required.
  • Previous pharmaceutical/biotechnology or related experience in drug development is highly preferred.
  • Diplomate American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) or equivalent/related certification highly preferred.
  • Proven track-record in working with large complex and international teams is preferred.

Other:

  • Some domestic and international travel (10%) may be required.
  • Some “off-core business hours” meeting participation and work required.
