The Senior Manager, Data Engineering, will lead the expansion of the Commercial Effectiveness (CE) group’s Analytics Data Workbench, and the development of data engineering to support machine learning and data science teams.  She/he will drive the forward-looking vision for Janssen’s cloud-based analytics strategy, leading the deployment and support of Janssen’s leading-edge technology to advance CE data sciences and enabling the data engineering capabilities.  She/he will work closely with the data operations teams who actively manage the day-to-day operations of the Commercial Data Platform (CDP) environment, to enable the data acquisition, wrangling, and data pipelines that will support the prioritization of analytics and data science projects across Janssen’s NA therapeutic areas.     

The Senior Manager will act as the primary contact for the Analytics Workbench across the CE organization, internal IT, and software partners, providing regular communications on the progress of Analytics Workbench enablement and operations.  She/he will be responsible for a team of external data engineers that works in a cross-functional team delivering advanced analytics solution.  The Senior Manager will evaluate new tools and technologies to further enable the Analytics Workbench for our Commercial Organization.


Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage the data engineering track for the Data Strategy and Management group.  Assist senior leadership team in evolving and executing the data strategy for the CE analytics and data sciences team:

    • Enablement of Analytics Data Workbench for data machine learning algorithms

    • Supplying of raw and curated and processed data for machine learning engineers and data scientists

    • Work on rapid prototyping applying innovative data engineering and cloud based capabilities to address sales & marketing business use cases

    • Work on the build and deployment of data pipelines on top of our CDP platform in production and supporting these pipelines on with continuous improvement mindset

    • Make recommendations on value and efficiency of new capabilities and technologies in order to advance adoption of data sciences and engineering capabilities across Commercial Pharma

    • Act as a change agent for making advance analytics capabilities more pervasive across the organization by creating demo capabilities working with internal teams and external partners.


  • Collaborate with data stewards on data on boarding and data validation activities for advanced analytics and data science systems:

    • Perform impact analysis of data events/changes on data science operations and engage business process owners to align on the action plan/next steps

    • Evaluate new data sources to determine benefits in terms of business insights for increase sales

    • Make recommendations on improvement of data acquisitions and data processing operations



  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required.



  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience in the healthcare/ Life sciences field is required

  • Strong Business and Data Analysis skills with focus on pharmaceutical commercial operations across one or more relevant therapeutic areas.

  • Cutting-edge expertise on cloud-based technologies supporting big data management, modern data pipelines, and integrated real-time analytics is required

  • Strong cloud-centric technical and big data toolkit (Spark and Redshift) is required

  • Experience with building and supporting data and ETL pipelines in Cloud

  • Strong understanding of data lifecycle, data quality, metadata and data management

  • Ability to work with agile prototyping teams as well as manage projects independently

  • Strong communication skills especially while dealing with diverse functional groups

  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Understanding of Machine Learning Algorithms in Sales & Marketing space

  • Experience in working in DevOps mode for analytics solutions in Cloud environment

  • Expert Knowledge in Python/SPARK/EMR/Glue/RedShift technologies

  • Knowledge of data querying/data analysis BI tools (Tableau, QlikSense, Dataiku)

  • Knowledge of data management related SoPs and workflows

  • Knowledge of data governance best practices

  • Knowledge of Commercial Life Sciences data sets (NPP, DDD, Xponent, Plantrak, SPP)
