This SDTL position is responsible to lead Device Solution Development Team efforts for the Lung Cancer Initiative (LCI), which is both a Cross Sector and World Without Disease (WWD) initiative. Specifically, this individual will be responsible for the development and execution of the Device Development portfolio for the LCI strategy, which is designed to prevent, intercept and cure lung cancer.
Key elements of success for this effort will include developing both a short-term and long-term Solution Development strategy that acknowledges the existing capabilities and resources that exist within the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, while laying out a vision that is integrated with the overall Lung Cancer Initiative strategy. Based on that strategy, the required internal talent will need to be identified, with focus on how best to leverage the WWD enabling capabilities that have already been identified as key elements for a future World Without Disease as well as capabilities within the Medical Device sector. In addition, this will require setting up key external partnerships to execute against this strategy. It is expected that new processes and procedures will be needed to operate most efficiently in this new paradigm, and this leader will work with the LCI and WWD Leadership teams to both develop and execute in this new paradigm. As part of the work with the external environment, this leader will work with key External Innovation personnel to determine potential funding mechanisms to access material amounts of capital to allow for the execution of this strategy.
The Device Solution Development Team Lead (SDTL) is responsible for development and execution of the solution strategy for multiple programs or portfolios, each of which initially will focus on medical device technology but could also include a molecular entity, a drug/device combination, or other combinations of products necessary to deliver against the agreed Target Product Profile (TPP). In addition, they will be responsible for the operational implementation, delivered through the effective leadership of cross-functional and cross-sector Solution Development Teams (SDTs). The SDTL is accountable for Exploratory and New Product Development phases related to the solution development programs. The SDTL leads the team to develop solutions in a timely and cost-effective manner and is responsible for the execution of the overall solution strategy. Team leadership via matrix interactions will include individuals from the World Without Disease venture, global regulatory affairs, project management, finance, legal, quality assurance and other key functions from the different sectors as relevant.
The successful candidate will manage cross-functional and cross-sector execution of the program plans through negotiating with key function and support heads about functional deliverables. They will actively contribute to Solution Strategy decision-making by providing relevant research, analysis and expertise. They will lead the development and maintenance of the project plans.
He / She will lead the communication of strategy and plans to the LCI and WWD governance committees, development partners, and other key stakeholders. They will align the SDTs to achieve their goals through the networks of people/functions represented on the teams. They will identify critical risks and assumptions and transparently communicate them to the SDTs, functions, LCI & WWD governance committees. They will lead resolution of issues at the SDT, LCI and WWD governance committees and senior management levels. They will lead SDT problem-solving and provide decision-making tools and techniques.
Advanced Degree (Ph.D., M.D., M.B.A.) highly desirable.
A minimum of twelve years of medical device industry or related experience is required.
Experience in a leadership role within a multi-functional R&D organization.
Ability to integrate cross functional disciplines into a successful strategy and project plan.
Understanding of requirements for successful commercialization of a new product.
Expert knowledge of the device development process and the competitive environment.
Strong problem-solving skills for developing creative solutions and meeting project objectives.
Demonstrated influence, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to influence without clear reporting authority.
Significant work experience in a leadership position in a team matrix environment.
Demonstrated ability of strategic thinking and contingency planning.
