Position Summary:
 

In this role you will play a critical role in the North American Pharmaceutical Communication & Public Affairs organization, responsible for leading the communication strategy and execution for our cardiovascular and metabolism brands, in the U.S., Janssen’s largest market. These brands are important drivers of Johnson & Johnson’s revenue, growth, valuation and reputation. The role has people management responsibility with a focus on:

  • Driving business unit growth and building stakeholder trust/advocacy through proactive public relations
  • Maintaining stakeholder trust and corporate reputation through effective management of complex, significant issues
  • Driving employee engagement and advocacy through powerful organizational communication
  • Enhancing systems, processes and capabilities to contribute to the development of the broader Janssen communication & public affairs team

Key Responsibilities:

As a lead commercial communication counselor, drive business unit growth and build stakeholder trust/advocacy through proactive public relations:

  • Develop strong partnerships with and serve as a trusted advisor to leadership (such as Sales and Marketing VPs and up to President level) on multiple brands and businesses
  • Design and implement communication plans and strategies that drive Janssen’s business, reputation and enhance our overall operating environment by drawing on deep internal and external networks, multi-stakeholder insights, detailed business acumen and an understanding of industry priorities
  • Proactively drive business and Enterprise outcomes by identifying and applying key outcomes metrics to communication practices, and provide insights that drive confidence, integration and alignment. Partner closely with Strategy & Insights team to develop metrics and assess impact
  • Anticipate and address emerging market and internal realities to drive revenue and profitability
  • Build understanding of current issues in the environment affecting businesses and brands – including partnering with Public Affairs colleagues to develop and execute strategies that inform and shape belief, action, behavior and advocacy to enhance our operating environment
  • Partner closely with the CVM Therapeutic Area Communication Leader within the Janssen R&D organization, Corporate Media Relations, Investor Relations and the broader GCPA team
  • Manage public relations agencies, external consultants and other professional agencies supporting brands and franchises
  • Develop and oversee public relations budgets and manage resources
  • Develop relationships with key media, including social media influencers
  • Build relationships with patient advocates, and act as a liaison to key third-party influencers and external constituencies

Maintain stakeholder trust and corporate reputation through effective management of complex, significant issues:

  • Proactively identify potential brand/franchise-related issues and develop appropriate management strategies
  • Manage product issues and other situations that may impact stakeholder trust and Company reputation
  • Partner closely with Global Janssen communication, Media Relations, Workforce Communication, Strategy & Insights and other enterprise teams to ensure alignment and tight coordination
  • Develop messages and serve as brand spokesperson for media inquiries

Drive employee engagement and advocacy through powerful organizational communication:

  • Partnering with business leaders, develop internal communication strategies and messages to inspire, engage, inform and align employees
  • Drive outcomes by bringing a measurement focused approach to organizational communication and incorporate relevant metrics that are indicators of employee engagement
  • Lead the strategic mobilization of our employees to support and enhance key brand initiatives
  • Work closely with the Manager, Internal & Executive Communication to ensure alignment across the broader CVM team
  • Partner closely with the Workforce Communication team, HR, and others to ensure integrated, seamless integration with Enterprise initiatives

Enhance systems, processes and capabilities to contribute to the development of the broader Janssen communication & public affairs team:

  • Model and inspire a continuous improvement mindset to ensure the function stays on the leading edge of communications, technology, social media and other key trends
  • Lead, develop and inspire one direct report 

Qualifications
  • BA required; advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Proven performer with 10 or more years of experience managing communications in a company, NGO, government agency or public relations agency; proven track record of successful public relations/communications, corporate communication, product communication, public affairs, and/or media relations achievements is required
  • Demonstrated ability to develop successful partnerships and influence with senior executives is required
  • Demonstrated ability to craft compelling stories, with superior written, oral and visual communication abilities is required
  • Experience in crisis/issues management is required
  • Experience working with national and local lay, professional/trade and social media is required
  • Deep understanding of digital and social platforms is required
  • Demonstrated analytic ability is required
  • Experience in managing budgets and schedules is required
  • Excellent judgment required
  • Ability to maintain perspective and bring positive attitude and courage to partnership discussions is required
  • Professional maturity and ability to work effectively across levels, functions, regions and backgrounds is required
  • Some domestic and international travel required (10%)
