The Senior Director, Global Head Investigative Toxicology, Nonclinical Safety (NCS) will be responsible for defining and executing the de-risking strategy for all novel therapeutics across multiple therapeutic areas and modalities.
The successful candidate will establish and manage state of the art scientific and laboratory capabilities within Nonclinical Safety. He/she will coordinate the early safety derisking pipeline and develop rapid issue resolution capabilities, deploying cutting-edge approaches in cell biology, biochemistry, molecular profiling & systems toxicology, and investigative in vivo models to identify, understand, and assess safety issues.
He/she will partner with Project Toxicologists to provide strategic and scientific input to multidisciplinary Project Teams across the pipeline from discovery through post-registration with an emphasis on molecule/target discovery and prioritization, and issue resolution.
This leader will be expected to cooperate closely with colleagues in computational toxicology and other functions across preclinical safety in the US and Europe, and employ both internal and external (Contract Research Organization) resources and expertise pragmatically to efficiently deliver comprehensive, data-driven molecule and target selection and human risk assessment, and to inform internal decision-making globally.
Overseeing a team of PhD level and technical level staff, the Senior Director will provide leadership, mentorship, and career development opportunities for his/her global team. This role will be responsible for future capital planning, innovation strategy, budget, resource and timeline commitments for the group.
The Senior Director, Global Head of Investigative Toxicology will join the Extended Nonclinical Safety Senior Leadership Team and will serve as needed as delegate leadership to early portfolio governance and in evaluation of due diligence opportunities. He/she will also be a member of the Extended Nonclinical Safety Leadership team responsible for the review and approval of nonclinical safety strategies as well as major issue review and recommendations for resolution.
The Senior Director will have a desire for learning and innovation, and continue career development through participation in scientific meetings, and increase visibility for self, Janssen R&D, and J&J, through publications, participation in external organizations, and presentations at major scientific, industry, and regulatory meetings. 20% national and international travel is required.
Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, pharmacology, toxicology or related discipline (bioengineering, medicine, veterinary science or related field) and/or professional degree (DVM, VMD) with training or extensive experience in cell and molecular toxicology or related biologic disciplines
15 + years of pharmaceutical/biotechnology research management or related experience in drug development
Proven track-record in leading complex scientific and laboratory teams, including direct people management and laboratory management experience across geographies
This role requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a high level of organizational ability and attention to detail
Good communication skills, attention to detail, troubleshooting skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment
Strong scientific and technical skills in emerging cellular and biochemical toxicology, target organ in vitro models, and animal alternative assays as well as ability to propose mechanistic hypotheses, design and oversee the execution of experiments
