The Director of Software Asset Management Services is an experienced, technical software licensing & Software Asset Management (SAM) expert to lead its SAM program that it provides as a shared service to the J&J family of companies.
The SAM Service exists to maximize negotiation leverage, contain licensing cost, & manage compliance risk of material publishers within the J&J family of companies. The role of the Technical SAM Manager/Director is to ensure that the SAM Service accomplishes these objectives in the eyes of its stakeholder “customers” (i.e., Procurement, App Owners, Finance, etc.) & executive sponsors. The Director is responsible for providing appropriate oversight of the underlying technologies, people and processes to support an effective asset management platform across J&J. The Director of Software Asset Management reports directly to the VP of End User Services.

Direct the global end to end management of the Software Asset Management service including locally reporting team members as well as regional team members. Lead the reporting, quality and communication of the top software providers to J&J.
Develop and report an analysis with Procurement and Finance partners the upcoming key events based on spend, strategic importance and timing for renewal/negotiations. Drive priority across programs with a focus on proactive decision-making.
Design and govern the overall SAM strategy ensuring the technical, data and procedural components are in place and managed. Collaborate with internal and external partners, business leaders, peer groups, vendors and research organizations to understand benchmarking and recommend service improvements.
Provide leadership, guidance, and coaching for all internal IT service owners on the options and governance approaches based on the licensing terms and opportunities.
Meet regularly with stakeholder customers to:
a) Validate requirements, needs, & wants across multiple service owners and technology partners;
b) Validate changing consumption forecasts;
c) Solicit feedback & offer best practice guidance;
d) Follow up on App Owner efforts to implement recommended remediation options;
e.) Drive policy adoption & alignment. Document, lead and execute Business Requirement plans and provide guidance to delivery teams implementing projects.
• Provide performance management and operational knowledge to leadership that focuses improvement efforts towards opportunities of the greatest impact to our clients.
• Track effectiveness of implemented process improvements and recommend to leadership any needed course corrections.
• Utilize voice of business and voice of customer from senior leadership, business directors, and clients to align process improvement efforts and ensure alignment in the support of strategic plans.
• Produce periodic and ad-hoc reports as per the management requirements to analyze trends, track critical service levels and key performance indicators for further efficiency opportunities.
• Communicating/coordinating with all locations within the global delivery team to ensure that landmarks are met as per established plan.
• Develop and utilize process performance metrics data to drive on-going improvements.
Other Duties:
1. Effectively & proactively communicate with stakeholder customers to manage & align expectations amid evolving organizational landscape. Take proactive ownership of contractual obligations & major licensing events of material contracts with material publishers.
2. Maintain a yearly analysis to determine materiality of publishers based on spend, risk, & strategic importance to drive program priorities & focus with stakeholder customers.
3. Manage the SAM Managed Service Provider to SLAs through regular KPI measurement; hold monthly business review on prior month achievement, including for
a) Reporting accuracy & adherence to agreed-upon schedule;
b) Publisher product completeness;
c) Inventory coverage;
d) Maintaining FNMS health.
4. Scrutinize, understand & communicate the deliverables provided by the SAM Managed Service Provider, including
a) Validate accuracy & completeness;
b) Understand report limitations & assumptions;
c) Develop the “story” of what the data is saying (i.e., ramifications of compliance gaps, extent of optimization opportunities, why do I care & what do I do, etc.);
d) Determine the implications of recommended actions;
5) Track the value of the SAM Service & effectively communicate shared successes to stakeholder customers & shareholders. Work with stakeholder customers & sponsors to remove internal roadblocks that could inhibit the program’s ability to operate efficiently & effectively.
6) Drive forward-looking direction of the program to align with strategic IT initiatives in support of current business drivers (acquisition integration, hybrid cloud expansion, adoption of utility license models, distribution of info via BI platform, alignment with ITSM, etc.).

Required Skills:
• B.S. Computer Science, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience; advance degree preferred
• At least 5 years of experience as a software auditor, preferably at a “Big 4” consulting firm or directly for a large software publisher OR at least 5 years of experience as a SAM consultant servicing multiple large organizations as part of a professional SAM consultancy.
• Deep technical licensing expertise with at least one large software publisher (i.e., Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, SAP, Salesforce, VMware, Quest, Micro Focus, etc.).
• Demonstrable ability to effectively research, understand, & apply complex licensing terms, technical license consumption metrics, & proofs of entitlement, including for unfamiliar software contracts, products, & publishers.
• Experience using the frontend components of & performing related tasks associated with software management suites to produce accurate & complete reports, including license creation, entitlement mapping, evidence mapping, entitlement imports, license bundling, enterprise groups, user to device association, custom reports, etc.
• Familiarity with other Flexera products, FlexNet Manager for SAP Applications, FlexNet Manager for Engineering Applications, SaaS Manager, etc.
• Knowledge & understanding of other relevant technologies including Tableau Server, IBM BFI / ILMT, Citrix XenApp & XenDesktop, Avecto Defendpoint, Microsoft AD & SCCM, ServiceNow ITSM, CM, Discovery, & Catalog, etc.
• General technical understanding of networking, firewalls, virtual machine architectures, thin-client architectures, server-client architectures, server partitioning, databases, middleware, Windows registry, WMI, etc.
• Excellent ability to present & communicate effectively to executive audiences in English (written & verbal).
• Proven ability to lead by example in a complex, decentralized organization; strong collaboration & influencing skills; strong people & customer management skills.
