Job Description:

The Business Operations Lead is responsible for handling all aspects of operational excellence for the JLABS @ Washington, DC site. They are a key member of the JLABS site team, partnering closely with the Operations Manager to oversee and manage site operations, which include: ensuring business, lab and safety compliance, planning and maintaining internal operating systems, and engaging closely with JLABS resident companies. This role is responsible for implementation and delivery of customer facing operating systems, processes, and policies that support management reporting, communications, data management, organizational planning and various business functions. In addition, this position is accountable for providing timely responses to resident inquiries and resolving  issues. 

This role will collaborate with internal Finance, Business Development, Marketing, Legal, EHS&S, Facilities & Operations departments and senior leadership to continuously assess the operating and business model for JLABS and its resident companies. This role is entrusted to monitor and adjust business processes as needed to implement process efficiencies and correct process gaps/failures.


The initial responsibilities of this role will focus on supporting the set up and build out of the brand new JLABS location in Washington, DC. This will be a particularly high profile JLABS site, engaging frequently with local organizations and policymakers.

This role will be responsible for establishing a strong foundation for a seamless transition to live operations immediately following opening. Ongoing responsibilities will include:

Set up and implement the operating model which includes onboarding activities (pre-move-in, move in), ongoing facilities/equipment/EH&S/security management and off-boarding activities for both JLABS and its Residents.  S/he will develop and sustain business relationships with companies residing in JLABS including gaining and maintaining the respect of the scientific community and is responsible for customer relationship management and ensuring positive customer workplace experiences during their residence in JLABS. 

Responsible for handling the essential aspects of JLABS recordkeeping, including, but not limited to, recording financial transactions, performing account reconciliation, managing accounts payable and receivable, and managing accounting tasks and activities to ensure an accurate and timely monthly close.

Collects data and prepares routine reports for management. Prepares budget recommendations. Implements cost controls to ensure budget parameters are not exceeded. Monitors activities for compliance around business procedures and workflows tracking Resident Orientation and business training processes. Surveys the customer base to measure customer satisfaction.

Advises management of the changing needs of the resident base and recommends process changes to accommodate Resident requirements, and assists in the development of business objectives, policies, and procedures.  Investigates and resolves escalated or complex customer complaints.

Partners with legal to process contracts, license agreements and create amendments to the agreements.



  • Bachelor's Degree (B.A./B.S.) required.
  • Minimum 6 years of relevant business experience required.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications with emphasis on Word, Excel, and Outlook is required.
  • 2 or more years of experience in QuickBooks preferred.
  • Salesforce experience a plus.
