The Scientific Director, Discovery Support & Biophysical Chemistry Research, will manage two teams to support Janssen’s biologics early discovery pipeline. They will design and implement broadly-based biophysical analyses aimed at characterizing the identity, binding affinity, and epitope of large panels of biologics in a high-throughput manner working in conjunction with the JBIO Antibody Generation Team. Screening methods will include SPR, HDX epitope mapping, mass spectrometry and others. In addition, the Director will manage a group of scientists focused on supporting the JBIO Exploratory Research group as well as internal and external collaborators by using biophysical techniques to characterize the quality of tool antibodies and reagents and by using imaging mass spectrometry to support new target discovery. He/she is expected to work closely with colleagues from the Exploratory Biology Group and Therapeutic areas to understand program needs and design studies appropriately.
The candidate will help establish a strategy for the biophysical analysis of novel therapeutic modalities in a cell-based context. The ability to apply a strong, fundamental understanding of biophysical chemistry to applied research problems is necessary for success in this position.
This individual’s effort will drive biophysics innovation, support advancement of research projects into the portfolio, QC of molecular tools, and drive the analytical strategy for hits screening in the early discovery phase.
Directly lead managers and indirectly manage employees of different levels.
Review and approve internal documents and advise on the submission of scientific publications
Contribute to hiring, promotions, pay adjustments, performance appraisals, development and other people related decisions
Develop and maintain a close partnership with stakeholder departments.
Exercise a highly complex level of independent judgment and execution which directly impacts the operational results of JBIO and is expected to influence across disciplines with senior leaders and external colleagues.
Be responsible for, resource allocation, efficiency and productivity solutions.
Set and monitor priorities, timeline and resources for their function, and contribute to hiring, promotions, pay adjustments, and performance assessments
Be responsible for their group’s business-critical initiatives such as staff development, training, mentoring employees, etc
- Education: Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Protein Chemistry, or related life science
- Post-doctoral experience followed by 12+ years pharmaceutical/biotechnology business experience, or 3-5 years of experience performing progressively advanced duties at the Associate Director level
- Expertise in SPR, LC-MS, and other biophysical platforms
- Some cell-based biophysical chemistry experience is preferred.
- Proven track record in leading scientific team(s) and direct people management experience.
- Strong collaborative skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
