This is a technical leadership position within the Biophysics group of the Biologics Development Sciences (BDS) Department, which is accountable to project teams and management for the quality, appropriateness, and scientific rigor of experimental data. The Biophysics group is responsible for characterizing and analyzing large molecule biotherapeutic drug candidates pertaining to all of Janssen’s Therapeutic Areas, from early discovery through NME declaration.

The Principal Scientist, Target Discovery Support & Molecular Tools QC, will be responsible for designing a strategy and conducting experiments to characterize the quality of reagents used in exploratory biology using various biophysical techniques like LC/MS, SPR, SEC-MALS, and others, directly or through the work of direct/indirect reports.  In addition, the Principal Scientist shall be responsible for the use of imaging mass spectrometry and/or proteomics approaches to support target validation. The Principal Scientist will also develop new methodologies to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of early antibody biophysical analysis and produce deliverables by exerting influence in a matrixed environment. Experience with cell-based biophysics and surface plasmon resonance is advantageous. Lead one staff scientist in Imaging Mass Spectrometry.

The Principal Scientist is expected to represent the Biophysics Department on JBIO project teams, interact closely with the colleagues from the Exploratory Biology and Therapeutic Areas to understand program needs, and to serve as a Biotherapeutics Project Team Leader.

Essential Functions:

  1. Directly or indirectly lead scientists.

  2. Develop and maintain a close partnership with stakeholder departments.

  3. Exercise a complex level of independent judgment and execution

  4. Be responsible for efficiency and productivity solutions.

  5. If having direct reports, contribute to:

    • hiring, promotions, pay adjustments, performance appraisals, development and other people related decisions

    • be responsible for business-critical initiatives such as staff development, training, mentoring employees, etc.

  •  Education: Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Protein Chemistry, or related life science At least 8 years of scientific experience, with at least 5 years in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry Expertise in multiple biophysical platforms and techniques
  • Experience leading scientific team(s) and direct people management experience preferred.

  • Strong collaborative skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
