Principal Data Scientist
Janssen Research & Development is currently recruiting for a Principal Scientist, Janssen R&D Data Science. The primary location for this position is Beerse, Belgium. Consideration will be given to Titusville, NJ.
At the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, what matters most is helping people live full and healthy lives. We focus on treating, curing and preventing some of the most devastating and complex diseases of our time. And we pursue the most promising science, wherever it might be found.
The Neurodegeneration Disease Stronghold, part of the Neuroscience therapeutic area is focused on bringing therapies to clinic for disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis and related conditions, to transform the lives of patients, families and populations of today and of tomorrow.
The Neurodegeneration Disease Area Stronghold is generating a data-sciences strategy to drive Target Identification and Validation and contribute to early development and as part of this is seeking an outstanding Principal Scientist to refine and implement this strategy. The postholder will develop a team of data scientists within the Disease Area Stronghold and the Neuroscience TA Data-Sciences group to design, develop, and field impactful data science solutions working very closely with wider company functions, especially Computational Sciences and Epidemiology. Using very large variable data sets from preclinical models and from man we will identify disease signatures and use these to identify, prioritise and validate targets for therapy as well as working with established computational sciences teams using cutting edge in silico drug development methods.
The position will be located organizationally within the data-sciences team but will work very closely with the cell and molecular biologists in the discovery science team and the Neurodegeneration Disease Area Stronghold leader. The position will be well supported by the Neuroscience Data Science team and reach out to the very strong computational science and other informatics functions of J&J and our external collaborators as we incorporate informatics into all aspects of our programmes to leverage big-data to drive scientific innovation. The role requires both a broad knowledge of complex analytics including use of bioinformatics together with machine learning algorithms and the possibility to use neural networks and to invent and customize when necessary.
The Principal Scientist will be someone who stays on the cutting edge of the data science field and will have both a broad knowledge of existing tools and methods but also the creativity to invent and customize when necessary. The Principal Scientist will grow a dynamic, accomplished team that supports the Neurodegeneration disease area in the discovery and development of innovative medicines.
•Demonstrate leadership by working with the Neurodegeneration Disease Area leader and the Neuroscience Data-sciences lead to further refine and implement the data driven drug development strategy for neurodegeneration
•Establish academic and industrial thought partnerships while on-boarding research institution collaborators as needed
•Foster understanding of and buy-in to the use of big data to inform and drive discovery and experimental medicine programmes through facilitation of proven change management strategies (e.g., workshops, on-site training and online programs)
•Establish active and productive joint programmes as part of the strategy with informatics functions in Janssen, in particular with Computational Sciences and Epidemiology
•Assimilate and synthesize emerging trends in data science and real-world evidence by attending relevant meetings and conferences
•Take a lead role in further refining and then implementing the Data Driven Drug Development strategy within the Neurodegeneration disease area stronghold
•Demonstrate leadership in technical guidance to working team
•Initiate and lead projects aligned with the Neurodegeneration data-driven drug discovery strategy
•Will be able to advise and contribute to projects outside of his/her responsibilities

•Ph.D degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience (OR Master’s degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience) in Computer Science, Statistics, Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence, Physics, Mathematics, Computational Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a related discipline is required.
•Familiarity with drug discovery and clinical development processes is preferred.
•Strong working knowledge of machine learning algorithms such as Random Forest, SVM, neural networks, etc. and other relevant approaches such as the use of neural networks is require
•Experience with epidemiological analyses including for example propensity matching and determination of disease trajectories and the use of real-world data including healthcare relevant datasets, such as EHR, insurance claims or registry data, together with the use of Natural Language Processing techniques would be an advantage
•Familiarity with large datasets, understanding of data analysis workflows, and/or knowledge of querying languages such as SQL is required.
•Proficient with one or more programming language such as Python, R, C++, or Java is required.
•Ability to effectively communicate technical work to a wide audience is required.
•Ability to work and influence cross-functionally with multiple teams from various departments
