Small Molecule Pharmaceutical Development (SMPD), the CMC organization (chemistry, manufacturing and control) within Janssen Pharmaceutica N.V., employs hundreds of scientific researchers and specialized technicians. The API Small Molecule Development department (API SM) is responsible for designing processes to supply large quantities of new chemical entities for R&D and commercial purposes. API SM develops practical, efficient, safe, and green chemical processes for drug candidates at all stages of development.

The Chemical Technology & Engineering group (T&E), a unit within the API SM, is expanding and looking for chemical process engineers on different levels: Scientist, Senior Scientist, Principal Scientist.

Job description Scientist role: Responsibilities and duties

  • You will play a key role in the evaluation of the scale up of chemical processes. 

  • As a member of a cross-functional team (organic chemists, analysts, process safety engineers, purification specialists, pilot plant engineers) you will be responsible for developing a deep understanding of our processes to ensure the highest quality product is manufactured within our API facilities. 

  • This includes late stage development, scale-up, new product introductions, and technology transfers, with the aim of delivering robust operational performance and scientific excellence.

  • You will actively participate in process design (experimentation and modeling) to deliver safe and robust API manufacturing routes whilst reporting progress to your peers, management, and to our customers. 

  • You will assume the role of process engineer within a specific cross-functional API project team whilst also being responsible for the development of digital twins for our entire portfolio. An understanding of chemical kinetics and mass transfer will be applied to replicate our chemical process in silico ensuring efficient development, and smooth scale-up to enable successful transfers of our new processes to our pilot and commercial plants. 

  • You will also participate in the conceptualization, development and implementation of mechanistic models and material property prediction tools and convey outputs from simulation studies clearly and concisely such that team members are well informed about the possibilities and limitations of modeling


  • You hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline or you have a Master Degree in combination with a consistent track record in the specific area of API development.

  • You have an expertise and a keen interest in handling large data sets, artificial intelligence, programming language(s), and machine learning.

  • You have knowledge of chemical unit operations (isolation, drying, distillation, milling etc.), downscale principles and reaction engineering (kinetics, mixing, heat transfer).

  • You are familiar with PAT tools, as well as modeling software.

  • You are able to independently execute experimental studies in the laboratory and use the data originating from PAT-enriched lab setups and parallelized lab systems to construct digital twins,..

  • You have excellent social and communication skills, speaking English fluently and willing to learn Dutch.
