Regional Lead lawyer for Asia Pacific Innovation Center (APIC) based in Shanghai, China or Singapore
Attorney to primarily provide legal counsel to the APIC and on a secondary basis, assist with other strategic transactions supported by the legal team of Johnson & Johnson Global External Innovation (the subgroups of which are defined below). Such transactions will run across the company’s three business segments (Consumer, Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices). This position is for an attorney within the Johnson & Johnson Law Department. This individual will sit in Shanghai or Singapore and advise and support the regional APIC team on a wide variety of external innovation initiatives in the Asia Pacific region and originating from APIC. This position will be a member of the Johnson & Johnson Global External Innovation Legal Team and in addition to providing support for APIC, the successful applicant may be asked to work from time to time on external collaborations and projects initiated by the various business groups of Johnson & Johnson Global External Innovation (GEI) around the globe. GEI business groups that may require legal support from time to time include its Innovation Centers in Boston, London and San Francisco, JLABS incubator group, JJDC corporate venture capital group, WWDA World Without Disease Accelerator and enterprise external research and development initiatives, e.g. Lung Cancer Initiative.
Qualified applicants are expected to be excellent lawyers with outstanding people skills, including the ability to effectively and efficiently draft and negotiate various agreements, that are on strategy for the consumer, medical device and pharmaceutical businesses of Johnson & Johnson. Primary responsibilities include drafting of early stage product/patent licensing and option agreements; research and collaboration agreements; strategic alliances, funding agreement and joint venture agreements, memorandums of understanding) with Government entities across the region; coordinating IP due diligence including freedom-to-operate and exclusivity reviews (the primary responsibility for which will reside within the Law Department’s IP legal group); manage outside counsel and in conjunction with APIC’s business development group, manage relationships with external partners. The exact nature of the roles to be played by the GEI attorney in conjunction with these activities will depend to a large extent on the individual’s qualifications and experience, and the circumstances of the matter they are working on. This individual will sit on the APIC leadership team and will be expected to contribute actively to the innovation strategy for the Asia Pacific region, as well as to work closely with the business leaders, colleagues and embedded J&J R&D leaders in the APIC as well as participate in key meetings and negotiations. Additionally, they will be required to build external relationships that are key to executing APIC’s strategy and enhancing its reputation.
A law degree and admission to an international bar is required. Qualified applicants should have a minimum of 8 years of transactional experience in early stage transactions for therapeutics, devices,consumer or health tech. Qualified applicants will ideally have a patent law license or otherwise be familiar with IP licensing, university technology transfer contracts, sponsored research agreements, licensing and option agreements with startup companies, or other similarly relevant technology-related transactions that are on strategy for the consumer, medical device and pharmaceutical business groups of Johnson & Johnson. Experience working in a multinational life sciences company, and experience handling strategic venture capital transactions (including newco formation), working with incubators and accelerators and having a PhD or advanced degree in the medical sciences, biology, chemistry or physics in addition to a law degree would be a plus.
