The Bacterial Vaccines department (BacVac) is working on the discovery and early development of novel vaccines for bacterial infectious diseases. BacVac’s Process development group has a very flexible platform that can service diverse project needs, from antigen production to early-stage manufacturability assessment. Within our activities, fermentation plays a key role and our department has different throughput scales and platforms.
To ensure reproducibility of our results, we use standardized protocols and operating conditions, which can be different between brands of fermenters, shake flasks, and micro-flasks. This leads to differences in performance across scales. The aim of this internship is to suggest improvements for our current operating conditions to ensure the reproducibility across different scales.
Deliverable: Scale up/down protocols between different platforms
The ideal candidate
The internship is ideal for students who has enrolled in Masters in fermentation technology, biochemical engineering, microbial physiology, biotechnology, biochemistry or similar degree programs. The internship can be part of the final phase of graduation studies.
The person is expected to work in the lab (hands on) and must be proficient or demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the following concepts and techniques:
Fermentation Engineering with basic knowledge of mass balances, scale up and scale down
Microbiological techniques (BSL I)
Operation of bench top fermenters, preferably with E. coli
Data interpretation of fermentation profiles and in-process control analysis
Analytical techniques: HPLC, SDS-PAGE, Bradford, plasmid stability
Scientific writing and presentation skills
Eagerness to learn and share knowledge
Some desirable skills (nice to have) are:
Knowledge about work with BSL II organisms
