Job Description:
The Senior Scientist Preventive Biomarkers is involved in the research on biomarkers, assays and technologies for a “Carcinogenic Exposure Effect Meter (CEEM)”, that will measure potentially carcinogenic damage in individuals resulting from e.g. tobacco smoking. The Senior Scientist is expected to design, lead and implement research projects with Contract Research Organizations and/or academic collaborators in close working relationships with internal and external partners where the Senior Scientist will drive the scientific debate, draft study plans, analyse, interpret and report on scientific data.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Explores and advises on scientific, technological and commercial opportunities in the field of carcinogenic damage biomarkers that support CEEM development.
  • Defines study plans for outsourcing activities, including milestones, budget and resources, aligned with the WWDA objectives and strategy, ensuring input and support by WWDA functions such as statistics, planning, as well as WWDA management.
  • Initiates and monitors studies outsourced to contract research organizations and academic collaborators.
  • Consults and collaborates with other team members to analyse and resolve study design and analysis problems, recommend technology-based solutions, or determine experimental strategies.
  • Selects, qualifies and supervises CRO’s for outsourced activities.
  • Reports results, discusses conclusions, and suggests follow up experiments and projects.

  • Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) with > 3 years post-doctoral experience.
  • A background in oncology and a strong knowledge base in human genetics and/or epigenetics, preferably in the fields of genotoxicity, DNA Damage Response and/or DNA repair.
  • A solid foundation in Next Generation Technologies for DNA and RNA sequencing, DNA methylation analysis and a broad experience in setting-up a variety of PCR methods is required. Experience with protein-based and/or cell-based assays and translation of assays to simple devices is desirable.
  • A proven track record in analytical method development and validation for biomarker research, both in academia and the biopharma industry.
  • Demonstrated track record in managing projects and external collaborations.
  • Working efficiently and independently towards solutions from literature searches.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, good judgment, planning and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English.
