(Senior) Scientist Protein Sciences
Location: Leiden (WWDA-Predictive Biomarkers)
Work hours: 40

Job Description:
The (Senior) Scientist Protein Sciences is involved in the production, biochemical and functional characterization proteins for investigations of WWDA targets leading to solutions in various disease areas, f/e lung cancer.
We are looking for a (senior) scientist with proven track record in protein biochemistry both in academia and the biopharma industry. The candidate must possess excellent knowledge in protein biochemistry. A solid foundation in protein purification techniques and protein characterization techniques such as, but not limited to, size determination by SEC-MALS, (non)native gel electrophoresis, Western blot and ELISA, is required. In addition, setting-up in vitro and cellular assays to study protein functionality is preferred. Broad knowledge of analytical and biophysical techniques is also desirable. The (senior) scientist is expected to design, lead and implement research projects. Furthermore, close working relationships are expected with internal and external partners where the (senior) scientist will drive the scientific debate and the (senior) scientist will actively participate in lab-work, drafting study plans and analyzing and interpreting scientific data.

  • Executes and supervises the production, purification and biochemical as well as functional characterization of proteins.
  • Initiates and monitors studies outsourced to contract research organizations and academic collaborators.
  • Writes study plans for (in house) exploration and outsourcing activities, aligned with the WWDA objectives and strategy, ensuring input and support by WWDA functions such as statistics, planning, as well as WWDA management.
  • Consults and collaborates with other team members to analyse and resolve study design and analysis problems, recommend technology-based solutions, or determine experimental strategies.
  • Identifies and advises on new technologies.
  • Reports results, discuss conclusions, and suggest follow up experiments and projects.

  • Experience with expression, purification and analysis of proteins.
  • Experience with protein purification, e.g. affinity based and size exclusion
  • Experience with analytical techniques to characterize proteins such as size determination by SEC-MALS, (non)native gel electrophoresis, Western blot and ELISA, is required. Experience in a wider array of technologies to characterize proteins is desired, a.o. isothermal titration calorimetry, glycan analysis etc is desirable.
  • Experience in working with different types of cells and with cell based assays for in vitro functional assays.
  • Demonstrable skills in trouble shooting, can-do attitude to deliver on targets.
  • Working efficiently and independently towards solutions from literature searches to hands on experimental lab work.
