The Team:

The Shopper Insights team are responsible for providing timely and actionable shopper insights and data to engage and inform the business and thus our external partners who regard us as category thought leaders and a reliable source of continuous reporting.


The Role:

The Shopper Reporting & Insights Manager is responsible for providing accurate and timely analysis in the form of a suite of reports by category across many defined metrics.  The Shopper Reporting & Insights Manager will provide all continuous reporting for the team each month in addition to supporting ad hoc and strategic requests that meet a business need and/or will aid decision making.


The Scope:

  • Cross GFO / all categories as required. Continuous reporting plus ad hoc requests

  • 95% Internally facing role and communication with external agencies

  • Occasional communication direct with Retailers, depending on ad-hoc projects

  • Key stakeholders: Category Development team, Customer Development, CS&P, EMEA Regional Shopper Team, Retailers (usually indirectly).

Continuous Reporting

  • Ensure accurate and timely delivery of monthly / quarterly reports that detail category, J&J and retailer performance. Provide headline commentary and insight with delivery of reports to stakeholders.

  • Explore advanced / alternative modelling and reporting solutions (e.g. Tableau, Excel Spreadsheet modelling) which add incremental value and simplicity.

  • Continuously evaluate usage and benefit of existing reports and tools and enhance/improve as necessary to enable individuals and teams to take action that adds value. Be a role model for turning data into insight and action.

  • Strategic Engagement with EMEA Regional team and feed Regional ‘Must Stock List’ (MSL)

  • Support Cross-GFO / Cross-Retailer ad-hoc reporting as required by Shopper and Customer Leadership Teams

 Information accessibility and understanding

  • Maintain and continually enhance the Shopper area of “The Hub” (a ‘one stop shop’ repository platform for information used across J&J Customer Development), to provide easy access to reports and tools to the total Customer Development function.

  • Partner with Category Development colleagues to leverage all data and insight and weave into business plans and retailer presentations to create competitive advantage for J&J.

  • Empower Shopper team whilst working with the Senior CS&P Analytics Manager to deliver on UK RGM goals and targets through development of reporting tools and solutions, training and expertise. Enable Shopper teams to utilise all relevant RGM tools (e.g. POM)

  • Run training and upskilling sessions with the Customer Development and Shopper teams which enable them to use external data more effectively

External Agency Management

  • Foster and maintain effective working relationships with J&Js appointed external agents ensuring projects are delivered on time, in full and at a competitive rate.

  • Monitor internal usage of Nectar and Advantage Card loyalty data, setting standards for usage that ensure an optimum return on investment.

  • Co-ordinate training sessions on loyalty data portals for colleagues as required.

  • Work with external agencies, e.g. Kantar and Nielsen and EMEA Analytics team to review and improve the quality of any Category Reviews, ensuring that they deliver actionable insights to Customer and Shopper.

Shopper Insights Projects

  • Play an active role in ad-hoc ‘Thought Leadership’ and ‘Big Picture’ Shopper Insights projects.

  • Support and occasionally lead the output delivery of projects both internally and, where relevant, to customers.

  • Mine all freely available sources of insight to support projects and add value to the rest of the organisation.

  • Be a key voice of the Shopper Insights team to influence action across the business

Business Planning

  • Provide support as required into the annual IBP process.  Work with the Senior Category Strategy Managers to revise the Category Development inputs and approach for IBP to ensure full utilisation by the Customer Development team

Experience Required:
  • Syndicated research background (or exposure to, e.g. IRI, Nielsen and Kantar)
  • Analytical capabilities – Advanced use of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and ideally Microsoft Access.
  • Knowledge of category development function and reporting requirements
  • Category development experience preferred; (commercial experience a bonus).
