Johnson and Johnson Law department is currently recruiting for an attorney to provide legal counsel on equity transactions to Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JJDC, Inc. (“JJDC”) and on a secondary basis, assist with other strategic transactions on behalf of the Johnson & Johnson Global External Innovation group (the subgroups of which are defined below). Such transactions will run across the company’s three business segments (Consumer, Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices). The position may be based in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Boston, Massachusetts, or South San Francisco, California, USA. Key Accountabilities:

This individual will primarily provide legal support and advice to JJDC on a wide variety of venture capital and equity investments globally. Many of the equity investments will be sourced by JJDC employees known as “investors” located in the Johnson & Johnson Innovation Centers in Boston, MA; London, UK; South San Francisco, CA; and Shanghai, China as well as from the J&J Innovation Centers and business development groups (BD Group) of Johnson & Johnson. Qualified applicants are expected to negotiate and draft equity investments and work in a matrix with three groups – (1) employees of JJDC (2) Law Department peers and functional specialists who support the Johnson & Johnson Global External Innovation group (including the Senior Counsel for JJDC) and Business Development, and (3) outside counsel – engaged to facilitate complex transactions involving equity investments. The exact nature of the role to be played by the JJDC attorney in conjunction with these activities will depend on the individual’s qualifications and experience, and the circumstances of each matter.

This position will be a member of the Johnson & Johnson Global External Innovation Legal Team and in addition to providing primary support for JJDC, the successful applicant will be asked on a secondary basis to work from time to time on external collaborations, options, licenses and other strategic transactions initiated by any part of the Global External Innovation group GEI includes subgroups that are closely connected. In addition to JJDC, the subgroups which may require legal support from time to time include its JLABS incubator group, J&J Innovation Centers, World Without Disease Accelerator (WWDA) and Enterprise Innovation initiatives, e.g. Lung Cancer Initiative.

Qualified applicants are expected to be excellent transactional lawyers with outstanding people skills, including the ability to effectively and efficiently draft and negotiate equity investment documents and other agreements related to transactions that are on strategy for the consumer, medical device and pharmaceutical businesses of Johnson & Johnson.



•             A law degree and admission to, and good standing with, a US state bar is required. 

•             A minimum of 5+ years of experience at a top corporate law firm or in-house corporate environment as a transactional attorney is required.

•             Recent experience in Private Equity and/or Venture Capital equity and investment transactions is required.

•             Proven ability to provide outstanding legal services to a range of senior executives and to manage and supervise outside counsel.

•             Experience in doing strategic transactions in the Life Sciences Industry is preferred and highly desirable.

•             Experience with licensing, collaborations and mergers and acquisitions is preferred and highly desirable.

•             Strong drafting and negotiation skills is required.

•             An ability to support multiple complex transactions by JJDC or other parts of GEI at the same time is required.

•             Applicants must be self-starters, have a positive attitude, high emotional intelligence and the ability to work in a highly matrixed but rewarding business environment. 

Able to travel up to 10% both domestic and internationally is required.
