The Senior Associate Scientist, Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) Process Development will perform process development for the large molecule cell culture and purification processes within the BioTherapeutics - API Development group.


Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Participate in the design of experiments, executing the planned experiments, and optimizing the process steps to the target process scale.  This will include the use of laboratory bioreactors, chromatography, and filtration.

  • Design and execute development studies to identify and determine appropriate ranges of (critical) process parameters for cell culture to optimize growth and product production.  This will include providing oversight of a group of high throughput automated bioreactor system superusers in support of multiple project teams.

  • Record and analyze experimental data, verify data integrity and accuracy, report/summarize findings to project teams, and draft technical documents as well as provide oversight of colleagues who do so.  This will include contributing to information database development and  improving workflow of information systems such as electronic laboratory notebooks.

  • Work in multiple team environments as well as contribute individually to meet project timelines and objectives.

  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry of a related discipline or a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry or a related discipline is required.

  • Experience with mammalian cell culture, bioreactors, bioreactor process development, and bioreactor data analysis is required.

  • Experience with high titer media, bioprocess metabolite analyzers, and high throughput automated bioreactor systems used for process development is required.

  • Experience with downstream processing and purification of large molecules, in particular chromatography and filtration, is preferred.

  • Experience with analytical methods typically used in the manufacture and characterization of recombinant proteins is preferred.

  • Experience maintaining written records of work in the form of laboratory notebooks (paper or electronic) is required.

  • Project management experience is preferred.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Must have strong organizational skills.
  • The ability to manage/pursue multiple projects with limited supervision is required.
  • The ability to report data and present findings to management is required. 

  • The ability to lead team-based collaborations in a cross-functional environment is required.

  • Occasional weekend work, as well as occasional work at a secondary facility in Springhouse, PA will be required.

  • This position may require up to 10% domestic and international travel.
