Johnson & Johnson offers a graduate programme within our medical devices business based in our Lifescan Scotland site in Inverness, Scotland. Inverness is the capital of the Highlands, one of the fastest growing cities in Europe and a fantastic place to be based. Most people know about the stunning scenery in the Highlands, but Inverness and the surrounding area has so much more. With multiple championship golf courses within easy reach, various on/off shore boating opportunities, world class mountain biking facilities, Inverness and the surrounding area is home to some of the best local produce in the whole of Britain.
LifeScan Scotland is the largest self-monitoring blood glucose manufacturing site in the world. Established in 1995, this part of Johnson & Johnson is a market leader through its OneTouch brand of products. The LifeScan Graduate Development Programme is a structured two-year rotational programme for candidates who have the desire and drive to operate within the Diabetes Care Franchise. You will be working across the business during the two years’ tackling diverse challenges and collaborating with a wide range of teams. The programme aims to deliver well-rounded professionals capable of working within a high volume medical device design & manufacturing company.
During this programme, you will have the opportunity to enhance your skill set through Continued Professional Development using internal Johnson & Johnson courses and selected external courses. Graduates are also encouraged to aim for corporate memberships with various recognised professional bodies, driving towards chartership. In addition to this, you will participate in on the job training where you will learn new leadership and improve your technical skills within your chosen profession.

The key functional areas outlined below make up the structure of the LifeScan Scotland Graduate Development programme will give you an opportunity to gain experience in each including the unique opportunity to spend time working within manufacturing operations on shift at the heart of strip creation.
Innovation & Improvement - R&D, Product Management, Regulatory Affairs
Development of new products, building significant enhancements into existing products and maintaining stability throughout introduction and launch; these teams are key to ensuring our products are always the best choice for our customers as well as introducing our products into new markets. Your technical knowledge will be stretched and enhanced in any of these rotations.
Manufacturing & Packaging - Controls, Process/Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Project Management, Scientific Support, Operations, Release Testing
Highly automated production processes used to manufacture 5.5Bn strips per annum. Technology including state of the art robotics and vision systems ensure high quality and efficient output. Our culture of continuous improvement ensures we are at the forefront of technology within industry.
Quality - Operations, Quality, CSV, Franchise Quality, Supplier Quality, Statistical Support
As part of the medical device industry we remain compliant within the various regulatory requirements covering our products. This includes material and process validation, training our associates to world class standards and ensuring that when a problem does arrive, we have the solution at hand to ensure there is no impact to our customers.
Aftercare - Complaints Management, Product Analysis, Medical Surveillance, Risk Management
Feedback received from our customers and patients is crucial to the successful operation of our business. Monitoring complaint data as well as investigating any product issues and feeding back findings to our upstream processes means that our customers’ experience is second to none within the industry.
Requirements of the role:
To be considered for this programme you must have graduated within the last 2 years gaining, at least, a Bachelors with honours degree in a Science, Engineering or Mathematics discipline.
Key skills and competencies (Engineering):
Strong desire to develop and improve existing skills in the following disciplines:
- PLC/ microprocessor or computer controlled production equipment
- Vision inspection systems
- HMI, PLC and Vision Programming
- SCADA Systems
- Comprehension of electrical and pneumatic schematics
- Fault finding techniques
- Electrical/ mechanical/ pneumatic system knowledge
- Commissioning and validation
Key skills and competencies (Quality/CSV):
- Knowledge of one of the following regulated industries: pharmaceutical, medical devices, engineering, banking or health and safety
- Knowledge of Quality Management System
- Knowledge of risk analysis
- Understanding the importance of document control
- Interest in organising/ leading validation working parties associated with computer systems, control systems, process and facilities and provide timely validation support to identified stakeholders
- Knowledge of bespoke software and/or hardware build, testing, documentation and deployment as part of software and/ or system development lifecycle
- An awareness on current regulations that must be adhered to, to achieve and maintain compliance
- Willingness to develop as an investigator
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Statistical programming experience
