Janssen Pharmaceutical Company, a member of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies, is recruiting an experienced Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist, at the Associate Scientific Director level to join the Global Pathology Team within Nonclinical Safety (NCS). This position will be based in La Jolla, CA or Spring House, PA. The successful candidate will work on a global basis, as a partner, in a cross-disciplinary matrix environment.

Key job responsibilities:

  • Support drug discovery and development by providing scientific input in the design and conduct of toxicology experiments that focus on understanding/assessing the human risk of novel therapeutic targets and/or understanding mode of action for toxicity in nonclinical studies.
  • Study pathologist on toxicology, discovery and pharmacology studies to include review of experimental/research protocols, provision of gross and microscopic evaluation of tissues and reporting of integrated results on a variety of nonclinical studies aimed at improving pre-clinical to clinical translation of both safety and efficacy.
  • Monitor and conduct pathology scientific reviews and peer reviews of outsourced GLP and non-GLP studies and/or act as the contributing scientist for the histopathology phase of toxicology non-GLP studies.
  • As a target pathologist understand the target biology and distribution; and translate such to potential safety liabilities for use in development of Toxicologic pathology strategy.
  • Review nonclinical Pathology reports and regulatory documents and provide input in determining hazard identification, risk assessment and risk management, providing mentorship on issue resolution and mitigation strategies.
  • Be part of interdisciplinary nonclinical development teams to drive compound progression and issue resolution.
  • Identify and lead collaborative scientific efforts with internal, external, partners and academic investigators.
  • Interest and knowledge in molecular pathology to enable selection and interpretation of appropriate safety/ efficacy endpoints and the design of mechanistic studies.
  • The pathology role can be combined with leading a project team as nonclinical safety lead if desired.


Education & Experience Required:

  • DVM or equivalent degree
  • PhD in toxicology or biomedical sciences
  • Board certified by the American/European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP/ECVP)
  • 5 or more years of Toxicologic Pathology in a Biopharmaceutical setting


  • Strong scientific interest, rigor, and curiosity
  • Team-player, excellent communication skills and recognized knowledge and expertise in the field of pathology

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $160,000 to $245,000. The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.
