Reporting to: Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor

Job scope: 

This role offers a unique opportunity to work within a small laboratory setting at a global leader in the healthcare industry. The position includes a very wide scope of testing to increase and further develop industrial microbiology skills and deepen your understanding of the role of QC microbiology labs within the medical devices sector. The post holder will be trained in a variety of test methods and be encouraged to undergo personal professional development throughout their time of employment.

The responsibilities & the impact YOU will have:

•             Coordinate testing in the Microbiology Laboratory to ensure agreed SLA’s are met

•             Carry out microbiological testing to ensure the ongoing quality of product

•             Interface with other departments to ensure timely release of products and materials

•             Delegate in the absence of the Microbiology and QC Team Leader to communicate microbiology batch release timelines

•             Investigate laboratory excursions and non-conformance investigations

•             Lead CAPA investigations

•             Ensure the principles of cGMP are applied and that all documentation is followed to comply with ISO9000, ISO13485, FDA QSRs and the Medical device directive

•             Complete Change assessments to ensure documents are updated in a timely manner

•             Maintain managed collections to ensure that validation documentation is completed in a timely manner

Duties & Responsibilities (leadership, people development, planning and execution)

•             Day to day performance:

-              Bioburden testing

-              Sterility testing

-              Antibiotic potency testing

-              Environmental monitoring

-              Enumeration and identification of contaminants

-              Management of consumables and materials used in testing

-              Autoclaving of items for the laboratory and production

-              Execution of the laboratory cleaning program

-              Review of sterilization documentation

-              Raising and completion of DHS

-              Review of testing

-              Coordination of the microbiological monitoring programs


We would love to hear from YOU, if you have the following requirements:


• Minimum of BSc in Biological Sciences (international equivalents acceptable)

• Desired BSc degree in Microbiology / Parasitology / Virology


  • Minimum 2 years experience in a Laboratory setting
  • Working with Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office)
  • Previous experience working within a quality environment in the Food, Consumer, Pharmaceutical or Medical device industry
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Self starter ability to guide junior members of staff
  • Technically skilled and logically minded
  • Commitment to job and desire to excel
  • Flexible in approach to work


  • High level of technical ability
  • Excellent understanding of Microbiological testing and environmental monitoring
  • Excellent understanding of Microbiological concepts
  • Good knowledge of cGMP and documentation practices
  • Computer literate
  • Knowledge of sterilization modalities
  • Good understanding of validation
