The Vice President (VP), Discovery, US Immunology is responsible for leading a large team of scientists working across 3 sites including Directors and Sr. Directors responsible for the Johnson and Johnson Immunology Discovery Portfolio spanning multiple modalities.  The VP will play a significant role in defining the scientific strategy for the discovery portfolio and ensure the portfolio is robust, aligned with the Therapeutic Area strategy and programs are advancing rapidly with scientific quality and rigor. This leader will serve as the senior representative of the Immunology Therapeutic Area at the La Jolla site. The successful candidate will drive external portfolio activities by partnering with innovation centers and business development to evaluate and advance licensing/acquisition opportunities within Johnson and Johnson.  Serve as a core leader on the discovery leadership team with responsibility for laboratory operations and budget oversight.  Serve as a core member of the Discovery Portfolio Committee.


·       Manage a group of ~40 scientists in immunology discovery, ensuring the matrixed team has strong leadership, rigorous science and appropriate development opportunities. Provide leadership for the entire Discovery team, especially in areas of development and enhancing our people managers.
·       Oversee multiple discovery programs spanning large and small molecules and alternate modalities and ensure programs advance rapidly with scientific rigor.    

·       Ensure preportfolio activities are strategically aligned and maintain portfolio sustainability
·       Serve as a senior leader representing the IMM TA at the La Jolla site, interacting with potential collaborators, local Universities and other TAs and partners located at the La Jolla site.  
·       Partner with innovation center and business development leads, along with DAS/PAS/functional leadership to perform scientific diligence/reviews of external assets, create a business case and advance through governance and ultimately if successful bring into the portfolio.

·       Collaborate broadly with multiple internal stakeholders/teams: Chemistry, biologics discovery, toxicology, DMPK, Innovation center and business development leadership, finance, discovery leadership across other therapeutic areas, strategic TA leaders, translational sciences and medicine leadership

·       Working relationships with academic scientific collaborators in immunology spanning the areas of immunology focus including GI, Rheumatology, Immunodermatology and Autoantibody 


·       PhD in Immunology or related discipline is required

·       Post-doctoral fellowship in Immunology or related discipline is required

·       At least 14 years of pharmaceutical industry experience with at least 10 years of people management leading large organizations is required

·       Experience in drug discovery, multiple modalities including large and small molecules is required; a proven track record of delivering clinical candidates into clinical development 

·       Extensive knowledge of the pathogenesis of autoimmunity including therapeutics available and in development are required

·       20% International and domestic travel is required

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $203,000 to $373,750.
