Key Responsibilities:

  • This position is the enterprise lead for Government Affairs & Policy for Johnson & Johnson (J&J) in Japan with focus on Pharmaceutical sector. The director will lead policy advocacy activities which is aligned with Business partner in G&O (Goal and Objectives) , drive Policy debate and contribute for better business environment for J&J’s sustainable business growth.
  • The position is directly responsible for leading and fostering strategic stakeholder relationships and issues management for J&J in Japan.
  • Japan is the second largest market for J&J with global focus and market leadership in healthcare. As such the position requires an executive capable of contributing as a thought leader, developing effective and innovative strategies that can be applied, not only in Japan, but potentially within the broader J&J geographies. As such the incumbent will, from time to time, be involved in relevant regional and global projects.
  • Will be an active and contributing team member in regional and global workgroups and projects.
  • Will be a member of the cross-sector business groups and be expected to contribute to commercial strategy development and execution as well as coaching/mentoring key talents within and beyond the GA&P function.
  • Proactively work with both internal and external stakeholders on all regulatory matters from policy development, interpretation and implementation.
  • Monitor the internal and external environment to ensure corporate integrity is established and fostered consistently across the culture, products and services, leadership and all operational aspects of the business.
  • Establish strong working relationships and communications with all local Japan business leaders to ensure best practice and sound corporate governance is achieved.
  • Establish strong working relationships across the Global and J&J Government Affairs and Corporate Affairs function, contributing ideas, strategies, project leadership in an innovative, thought provoking and collegiate manner.
  • Develops an in-depth understanding of the drivers for each of the five key stakeholder groups: physicians, patients, providers, the payers and the policy makers.
  • Create and manage adherence to the department budget.

 
Key Performance Indicators:

  • External leadership representing J&J with external industry bodies (including business and trade groups). Lead the strategy for J&J alignment with third-party organizations to advance J&J Policy initiatives and priorities in Japan.
  • Ensure Japan is aligned and contributing to a CRM system to align all stakeholder engagements with business priorities for GA&P.
  • Operate as a role model to all by ensuring that everything they communicate and undertake is consistent with the J&J Credo.
  • Develop a strong understanding for the J&J Japan business including our people, operations and external operating environment.
  • Lead the strategic planning process to align a well-defined Government Affairs and Policy strategy which is integrated with the broader business imperatives of the Company.
  • Will work with the leadership team to support the talent development for the team members.
  • Deliver key engagements to enhance the J&J reputation in Japan. Lead the team to effectively manage external stakeholders and key issues for the Japan business.
  • Develop a well-documented relationship plan and map outlining key stakeholders with whom the business needs to have a relationship, the interdependencies between those stakeholders and the alignment of J&J executives to each stakeholder.
  • Provide strategic counsel to the senior leadership on Government Affairs Policy and external strategy for the Japan market.
  • Work collaboratively with the global GA&P organization to represent Japan on projects and councils for the functional representation.

Qualifications

Qualifications - 

  • Have strong presence, outstanding interpersonal skills, excellent leadership and influencing skills, an established level of credibility and strong business acumen.
  • Demonstrate a mature, adaptive and flexible disposition to credibly and effectively interact with a range of senior level executives across the global business and broader market segment.
  • Have extensive experience in formulating and leading significant issues management, government relations and policy advocacy activities
  • Be highly articulate, with excellent written and verbal communication skills both in Japanese and English.
  • Have the ability to anticipate emerging issues of importance to the company and the sector, and to prioritize appropriately.
  • A deep knowledge of the industry regulatory & healthcare policy environment coupled with a strong ability to clearly articulate a plan that enables J&J to understand the risks, opportunities and implications of industry/government initiatives that may impact the business with strategies to manage issues both proactively and reactively.
  • Have intellectual curiosity for trend of innovation and actively lead in collaboration cross-sectors and with external players to develop strategy for shaping policies and advocacy toward innovation.
  • Experience in Healthcare industry, commercial background is a plus but not mandatory
