We’re looking for a highly motivated and experienced engineer who is passionate about mechanical design and applying this knowledge to the field of medical robotics. This engineer will be part of a multi-disciplinary team, focused on quantitative results and delivery of a system that exceeds expectations of the customer. As an experienced professional, this engineer will lead projects, mentor other engineers, communicate within and across teams, and demonstrate sophisticated mechanical engineering knowledge to drive projects to completion. In addition to team collaboration, they will also actively work on challenging individual projects. For a self-motivated individual, passionate about development of a best-in-class surgical robotics platform, this is a unique opportunity to jump into the middle of a challenging environment.

What You’ll Do:

  • Contribute to the development of a robotic platform focusing on large systems, sophisticated actuation mechanisms, structural design, instrument and human interfaces, and electronic packaging.
  • Understand system and subsystem-level requirements and component capabilities to design elegant solutions to problems which may appear to be highly constrained.
  • Design and create electromechanical prototypes which can be used to inform and drive design decisions; provide hands-on troubleshooting for these prototypes in support of a rapid development cycle.
  • Author engineering studies, FMEAs and tolerance stack-up calculations to support design decisions.
  • Follow good documentation practices to release design documentation through ECO processes.
  • Must be capable of working independently and in a team, while being flexible, self-motivated, curious, and willing to redefine the world of medical robotics.
  • Negotiates complex issues, effectively promoting cohesive teamwork and sustained focus on goals.


Required Education: 

  • B.S in Mechanical Engineering or other related Engineering field. 

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 10+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience.
  • Solid understanding of medical capital systems and critical organizational knowledge.
  • Comfortable with all phases of product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification & validation, qualification, and transfer to manufacturing.
  • Experience designing for manufacturability and a solid understanding of common manufacturing processes such as machining, casting, stamping, forming, injection molding.
  • Proven experience and proficiency using CAD to design and document both large and small parts and assemblies.
  • Proven experience in mechanism design, electronics packaging, and knowledge of various types of motors, encoders, sensors, and drive-train related components such as gears, lead screws, splines, cams, linear guides, belts & pulleys
  • Strong understanding of component selection criteria and design for reliability and manufacturability
  • Ability to perform basic FEA or other analyses focused on mechanical strength, heat generation and dynamic performance.
  • Ability to plan and implement large complex tasks requiring multi-disciplinary teams without appreciable direction.
  • Deep understanding of risk analysis procedures and evaluation.

Other Requirements: 

  • Ability to travel up to 10% domestic US and International, with overnight stays.
  • Ability to work on-site in Santa Clara, CA. 

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • M.S in Mechanical Engineering or other related Engineering field, with 8+ years of industry experience. Or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or other related Engineering field, with 5+ years of industry experience.
  • Product development experience with at least two products, preferably medical devices, from concept to launch.
  • Understanding of clinical procedures. 

The anticipated salary range for this position in the Santa Clara, CA area is $139,000 to $224,825.
