Johnson & Johnson is recruiting a leader for BLUE KNIGHT™, a joint initiative between Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JLABS and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Preferred location is Washington, D.C. Candidates may also be considered to be based at another JLABS location in the U.S. (San Francisco, San Diego, NYC, Houston) or New Brunswick. Remote candidates may also be considered on a case-by-case basis. Candidates must be willing/able to travel to Washington, D.C.

BLUE KNIGHT™ launched in 2020 and is a global initiative supporting early-stage companies strategically aligned to both J&J and BARDA. Companies selected for BLUE KNIGHT™ are supported through JLABS and receive additional, unique benefits through the collaboration with BARDA. These unique benefits include fee assistance for access to JLABS, additional mentorship from BARDA, dedicated programming and visibility opportunities, and access to the limited competition BLUE KNIGHT™ Resident QuickFire Challenges. BLUE KNIGHT™ supports early-stage companies globally, at the BLUE KNIGHT™ hub at JLABS @ Washington, DC; physically at JLABS locations across North America; and virtually around the world. This position is externally funded and contingent upon the funding associated with the respective program.

This position will be responsible for setting the BLUE KNIGHT™ strategic direction; portfolio sourcing, selection, and management with a particular focus on companies with multi-use capabilities with commercial and preparedness applications; and oversight of all operational activities related to the collaboration with BARDA. This role requires close communication and collaboration with BARDA—in particular with the BARDA DRIVe Catalyst Office—and with individuals across BARDA.

Key areas of responsibility related to leading BLUE KNIGHT™:

  • Maintain strong relationship with BARDA through consistent engagement with their technical and contractual representatives for the collaboration.
  • Lead the strategy, operational and logistical activities and team to ensure the delivery of the business objectives including space fulfillment performance measures, portfolio development, and innovation activation including education and outreach activities.
  • Lead a cross-departmental team to develop the educational programming calendar and manage the delivery of these programs to ensure stakeholder engagement and success.
  • Represent BLUE KNIGHT™ at external engagements, conferences, and hosted programs.
  • Manage the sourcing and selection of high potential companies and manage the internal and external stakeholders engaged in the Selection Process, in partnership with the relevant JLABS Heads and Scientific Portfolio Engagement Leads.
  • Actively engage with start-up companies globally in areas of interest and serve as an advisor and scout for opportunities for J&J to partner directly with the companies.
  • Build relationships with Venture Capital, Angel Funds, Government Agencies, and other non-dilutive funders to create opportunities for them to engage with BLUE KNIGHT™ companies.
  • Drive internal collaboration with each of J&J sectors, including Innovative Medicine, MedTech, and other internal capabilities.
  • Manage portfolio of resident companies and network them across internal and external networks and channels.
  • Lead the future vision for the initiative Manage financial forecasts, reporting, budget and invoicing in alignment with contractual requirements and annual US government appropriations needs.
  • Maintain strong relationship with internal J&J stakeholders and function as the JLABS representative for BARDA program governance.

Befähigungen

The successful applicant will have deep experience and understanding of the infectious disease, global public health and/or pharma industries and working with government agencies, as well as government funding and reporting obligations.

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • An advanced degree is preferred.
  • A Minimum of 10 years of experience and a track record in senior program management is required.
  • Knowledge in Public Health and/or BARDA areas of strategic interest (CBRN, pandemic preparedness, emerging infectious diseases) is required.
  • At least 6 years of relevant professional experience in the healthcare industry is required.
  • Must possess deep experience in program budgeting and fiscal management with experience in business development, technology transfer, management consulting, and/or venture capital investing.
  • Experience working with government agencies, as well as government funding and reporting requirements.
  • Experience in the evaluation and execution of a diverse set of business development opportunities is required.
  • Strong people leader and cultivator of talent.
  • Demonstrated adaptability to work across functions and therapeutic areas is required.
  • This is located in the United States with a preference for candidates located in Washington, DC and requires willingness to travel (mostly U.S., but could include international travel) up to 25% of the time. Candidates not located in Washington, DC must be willing to travel to Washington, DC (the BLUE KNIGHT™ hub), on a routine basis.
  • Experience in funds management and grants/proposal writing is preferred.
  • Experience in collaborating with several partners/senior leaders of large donor organizations and senior government officials is required.
  • Demonstrated Influencing, negotiation skills are required.
  • Experience with major events and engagements.
  • Demonstrated success in closing deals, finalizing partnerships that have significant impact to the overall business is required.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is 163,000 to 281,750 in California Bay Area - The anticipated base pay range for this position is 142,000 to 244,950.

The compensation and benefits information set forth in this posting applies to candidates hired in the United States. Candidates hired outside the United States will be eligible for compensation and benefits in accordance with their local market.

Employees and/or eligible dependents may be eligible to participate in the following Company sponsored employee benefit programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance.

Employees may be eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).

This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program.

Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:

  • Vacation – up to 120 hours per calendar year
