Johnson & Johnson is currently seeking a patent attorney to join our Global Legal Organization in Aachen, Germany as a Senior Counsel Patent Law.
The role can be performed remotely.
This Senior Counsel Patent Law position will primarily support the MedTech sector of Johnson & Johnson, and more specifically, its operating company Abiomed. This position is based out of Abiomed’s Aachen, Germany office and reports to a Director Patent Law while also working closely with different research teams in Abiomed’s R&D department.
The successful candidate should be able to work independently while aligned with the Johnson & Johnson Global Legal Organization, balance multiple job tasks, prioritize tasks well, and be comfortable and proficient analyzing and drafting patent-related technical documents.
Key Responsibilities
- Developing and handling Abiomed’s patent portfolio, including preparation and prosecution of patent applications around the world.
- Conducting freedom-to-operate analyses in support of new product development.
- Drafting and negotiating complex IP, research, product development, and other agreements.
- Providing due diligence support for business development activities.
- Counseling senior business leaders and other stakeholders on complex legal and business issues.
- Providing IP support for the business and engineering teams in Aachen.
- Working directly with inventors to collect invention disclosures and technical details about inventions.
- Providing IP education and training to local R&D teams and other stakeholders.
- Liaising with external counsel to draft patent applications; review and/or prepare responses to office actions and coordinate prosecution globally; draft and prosecute patent applications as necessary.
- Developing superior knowledge of competitive technologies in the cardiovascular industry.
- Supporting the implementation and execution of the German inventor remuneration process.
Befähigungen
- A university degree in mechanical/electrical/aerospace engineering or a similar discipline is required.
- Admission to practice before the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) and/or European Patent Office (EPO) is required (German/European Patent Attorney).
- Deep knowledge of the German Employee Inventions Act.
- A minimum of five (5) years of law firm or corporate law department experience in the patent field, preferably as a German/European Patent Attorney.
- A demonstrated background in medical devices is preferred.
- Experience collecting invention disclosures, conducting patentability and freedom to operate analyses, and drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications is required. Prior experience with IP due diligence, transactional work, and litigation is preferred.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills in English and German are required.
- The ability to articulately and positively engage internal and external partners is required.
- Ability to handle multiple projects with attention to delivering quality work products to satisfy tight deadlines.
- Travel up to 15% both domestically and internationally is required.
